The farming part of the story is not where my one star review comes from The idea, how it came together. The challenges, rewards and hardships about farming is excellent.
The problem, for me, is with the farm animals. Having one Coyote decimate chickens and ducks without coming up with a solution is downright negligent.
The coyote comes back, kills some more, time and again and they finally they throw up a poorly constructed fence and when that doesn't work they shoot and kill the coyote.
Here in Vermont there are so many backyard chickens and plenty of farms with chickens and a hell of lot of coyotes, fox and fishers and guess what, people don't run through their yards loading a shotgun and firing away.
They take adequate safety precautions beforehand. And by the way, all killing that coyote will accomplish is opening up that territory for another.
Seeing the first of their pig, Emma's, piglets now lbs being weighted and sent away on the truck for slaughter also wasn't what I was interested in seeing, especially after seeing how in the trailer they were treated more like pets.
That's the point I stopped watching so I can't say if my opinion would have changed had I watched it to the end. Update: January 3, When I posted this review it was solely to provide information and opinion to like-minded people.
Information I would have liked to have had when deciding whether this was something I'd want to watch.
I live in Vermont and know how challenging farming is for most to make ends meet. I've read all the comments and realize that this film has touched many in a positive way.
As the film opens, we see Molly scrambling to gather a few things as the farm is besieged by several wildfires and everyone needs to leave.
We then go back to "", as we get to know John and Molly, living in their small Santa Monica apartment.
During one of John's camera shooting projects, he ends up adopting a black lab, Todd, from the shelter, and it's not long thereafter that John and Molly are in essence forced to move from their apartment as Todd won't stop barking, and they decide to their dream of farming.
They end up in Moorpark, an hour north of Los Angeles At this point we are not even 10 min. Couple of comments: filmed over almost a decade, this documentary is photographed and directed by John Chester, and it feels almost like a home movie.
A decade or so is condensed in 92 min. Along the way, we get to witness so truly amazing and moving moments as Jeff and Molly face complicated challenges coyotes, severe drought, etc.
The movie's photography is eye-candy from start to finish. Kudos also for the wonderful original score courtesy of composer Jeff Beal.
I can't wait to visit and tour Apricot Lane Farms myself at some point. The movie finally opened this weekend at my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati, and I couldn't wait to see it.
The Saturday matinee screening where I saw this at was attended nicely about 20 people. Strong word-of-mouth can make this film into a genuine blockbuster on the art-house theater circuit.
Contradictory morals. It would be different to hunt wild pigs and other animals to harvest their meat and bones and skin out of necessity Stop harvesting animals for profit.
It has to be the most extraordinary account of human beings learning, through trial and error, to live in accordance with not only nature, but the greater cosmos in which we reside.
It would've been sufficient if we were simply shown the photographs of the BLF. It would've been perfectly fine just to hear from John, the BLF's mentor; his words of guidance were absolutely profound.
Heck, just to see the animals in animation would've been great fun! Everyone should see this documentary! The story of the farm is well, and fairly told.
Robert Roten. Despite its narrative simplicity, the richness of its subject gives this film real charm and makes it compelling viewing.

How did you buy your ticket? When the barking of their beloved dog Todd leads to an eviction notice from their tiny LA apartment, John and Molly Chester make a choice that takes them out of the city and onto acres in the foothills of Ventura County, naively endeavoring to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete coexistence with nature.
The land they've chosen, however, is utterly depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought. The film chronicles eight years of daunting work and outsize idealism as they attempt to create the utopia they seek, planting 10, orchard trees and over different crops, and bringing in animals of every kind- including an unforgettable pig named Emma and her best friend, Greasy the rooster.
When the farm's ecosystem finally begins to reawaken, so does the Chesters' hope - but as Written by NEON. If you want to see a well paced and beautifully filmed documentary about an ethically-driven farm, please watch and enjoy.
I'm no biologist or farmer , so I offer no critiques about how they handled day to day issues concerning their animals and crops. What was missing, however, was information about the ongoing finances of the farm - how much it cost to get it running, and how they obtained the capital to keep it going until they could generate income.
What were the specific terms for repayment to investors? They were pouring money into animals, crops, and equipment even after acquiring the land.
I was also interested in how or whether they paid and housed employees, and how much operating income they were generating from crops versus animals.
I understand that "dollars and cents" may not be the most interesting issue, but if the point of the documentary was to encourage others to pursue the same dream, then it would have been helpful to devote minutes explaining how they kept it all going, financially.

I found Patti and Little Big Farm through the Slow Flowers website. I absolutely could not have been happier with the flowers for my wedding. I almost cried when I saw them- they were that beautiful.
